Students pay Northwestern tuition and are responsible for travel and all other expenses (including room and board). Information on the visa process can be found on the Campus Life page.

Host Institution

HKU is an internationally recognized teaching and research university and the oldest tertiary institution of higher education in Hong Kong. HKU is organized into 10 faculties, with particular strength in the humanities, law, political sciences and biomedicine.

Housing & Meals

Students live in on-campus university residence halls or off-campus. Meals are not provided for either housing option, but are accessible in the cafés and restaurants on campus. Students should be aware that there is limited on-campus housing availibility and students are not guaranteed a spot on-campus. Visit the University of Hong Kong webpage on Housing for more information regarding on-campus and off-campus housing options.

Students at HKU may take classes in a variety of subjects. Please note, more than 50% of the credits must be chosen from one single facutly. For most students, this means taking 3 courses per term in one faculty.

Students will receive a transcript issued by HKU and course credit will be eligible for transfer back to Northwestern as long as students earn course grades of C or better. Refer to the Credit Transfer Page for information on the “C” grade equivalent and minimum credit requirement for this exchange program.
