In this exchange program, students enroll directly at the University of Hong Kong. Students are also able to combine research with courses in a wide range of fields. Northwestern students have the option of studying abroad for a semester or full academic year. Students pay Northwestern tuition and are responsible for travel and all other expenses (including room and board). Information on the visa process can be found on the Campus Life page.

Host Institution

HKU is an internationally recognized teaching and research university and the oldest tertiary institution of higher education in Hong Kong. HKU is organized into 10 faculties, with particular strength in the humanities, law, political sciences and biomedicine.

Housing & Meals

Students live in on-campus university residence halls. Meals are not provided, but are accessible in the cafés and restaurants on campus. Visit the University of Hong Kong webpage on Housing for more information.


Students at HKU may take classes in a variety of subjects. Please note, more than 50% of the credits must be chosen from one single facutly. For most students, this means taking 3 courses per term in one faculty.

Students will receive a transcript issued by HKU and course credit will be eligible for transfer back to Northwestern as long as students earn course grades of C or better. Refer to the Credit Transfer Page for information on the “C” grade equivalent and minimum credit requirement for this exchange program.
